Honeybourne Gate Independent Living in Cheltenham was completed in 2015 for The Markey Group. Where possible, guidance in Approved Document B was followed, supplemented by a fire engineered solution by Exova for aspects of the building outside the scope of ADB.
55 apartments and common area facilities including the top floor of an atrium are protected by a Blueflow® Fire Sprinkler system, designed and installed to BS 9251:2005 Residential Standard and the Exova fire strategy.
The building has five storeys with a small plant room in the basement and a roof garden. The layout has concentrated the community facilities to the ground floor so that the residents can interact with one another. The 4 storey high atrium starting on the first floor provides an open social space all the way to the roof.
Water for the sprinkler system is fed from a 13m³ underground storage tank with a submersible booster pump. The apartment sprinkler systems are fed from distribution pipework and risers at each floor level which also provide boosted sprinkler supplies to the common areas and top floor atrium.
Each apartment has an individual alarm indicator, which provides a signal to the apartment smoke detection unit. Each floor also has a sprinkler control valve off the main sprinkler riser. Upon activation of an apartment sprinkler head or common sprinkler head, a signal links into the building’s fire alarm system.
