Buildings with floors more than 50m high must feature a wet rising main (wet riser), designed and installed in accordance with BS 9990: 2015 Code of Practice for Non-Automatic Fire Fighting Systems in Buildings.
The principal behind the installation is to remove the need for fire fighters to carry charged fire fighting hoses up several levels of a building, which would undoubtedly delay fire fighting and present an evacuation hazard
Wet risers should be designed and installed in accordance with BS 9990: 2015 Code of Practice for Non-Automatic Fire Fighting Systems in Buildings.
The pipes in wet risers are always charged with water, with pressure regulated by pumps to deliver the water to the landing valve outlets. These pumps draw water from storage tanks and operate when the pressure in the rising mains drops. This occurs when a landing valve is opened. Such fire fighting systems do not depend on the fire service appliance or water from the local mains.
